Core Principles / Manifesto
Over the time I’ve spent working on Infrastructure related projects…
I have come to believe in several core principles. These principles have bled in to my personal life and have molded me in to who I am.
Longevity and validation over a short term fix
It may take more time and effort to develop a long term fix, but if it’s at all possible to create a solution that will stand the test of time, it is preferable to do so.
An unproven assumption, until proven, is a risk
Until the assumption is validated, it must be treated as only a hypothesis or theory. Creating solutions based on an assumption is not sustainable.
Don’t continue making a mistake even though you’ve already spent time making it
Pause, reevaluate, reiterate, reconsider and if the project calls for it, start over with new requirements.
Hope is never a solution
Hoping something will happen or will be created, fixed, moved, produced in most cases is not valid; it’s not measurable or attainable is little more than an idea.
Transparency and Truthfulness
Trust is something earned and once earned, I keep it. Being transparent with roadblocks, issues and roadblocks and not hiding behind them help finish the job.
Logical over Emotional Decisions
Emotion can get in the way of wise decision making. Think critically and objectively on problems and solutions before presenting them as valid.
Biases
Conscious awareness of bias
There are a number cognitive biases that can affect a properly designed solution and create what one might call the status quo. Typically, biases are created and perpetuated based on a number of things – noise processing, real world experience, wishful thinking and perception. One might have a strong bias toward one particular brand or vendor because they’ve had a good experience with that brand or vendor. These biases can get in the way of good decision making and being aware of their existence creates better decision making.
